Relief, recovery and rehabilitation work for flood affected students The devastating 2022 floods in Pakistan resulted in widespread destruction and loss of life. With 1,739 fatalities, including 647 children, and around eight million people displaced, these floods marked the deadliest natural disaster in the country since 2010. This project aimed to rehabilitate the flood affected school “Government Girls Community Model School Thatha Baluchan” in the district Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which has 170 girl students and five teachers, by restoring the school to a functional state in order to provide an improved educational environment and enhance the learning process for its students. The project was implemented by HOPE’87 and co-funded by ANT Hiroshima (Japan). The floodwaters demolished the school’s boundary wall, damaged furniture, books, and school records and left sludge standing in the premises. To rehabilitate the school, several activities were undertaken to restore the school to its functional state, including cleaning of debris, removal of mud and sludge, the repair of damaged benches, replacement of broken window glass as well as whitewashing of six rooms, the veranda, boundary walls, doors and windows. The school has now regained its functionality and resumed regular classes, bringing happiness to the students, teachers and the community. The students now have clean and safe classrooms to sit in and learn as well as clean drinking water, which ensures the students’ well-being. Moreover, the learning and teaching processes have been enhanced, enabling a better educational experience for the students. The rehabilitation of the “Government Girls Community Model School” in the District Dera Ismail Khan has thus marked a significant milestone in the post-disaster recovery efforts. Through the dedicated efforts of the project team and the support of various stakeholders, the school has undergone a remarkable transformation, providing an improved learning environment for the students and fostering a sense of hope and resilience within the community. 170 girl students and five teachers, who previously faced challenges and disruptions due to the flood damage, have now returned to the school, eager to resume their education in a safer and more conducive environment.
