Psychical recovery and reintegration into social life for children and youth suffering from cancer in the Republic of Moldova From 2010 to 2013, the project “HOPE for the children of Moldova – establishment of a bone marrow transplantation unit and an educational unit for long-term hospitalised children in the Institute of Oncology in Chisinau” was implemented with the objective of supporting the physical recovery and reintegration into social life of children and youth suffering from malignant tumours. In order to ensure the long-term social, institutional and financial sustainability of the project, a solution had to be found to further guarantee an access free-of-charge for all children-patients to the services of the Education Centre and its medical facilities. Therefore, a “sustainability-guarantee” was requested from the government of the Republic of Moldova in order to ensure and also to be able to demand at a later stage accountability of the relevant partners, i.e. the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finances and the Institute of Oncology, regardless of any electoral changes. This guarantee was finally given with the Government Decision No. 471 of July 2nd, 2012, published in the official journal of the Republic of Moldova. The follow-up-project “Psychical recovery and reintegration into social life for children and youth suffering from cancer in the Republic of Moldova” was implemented by HOPE’87 together with its local partner Speranta 87 in cooperation with the National Commission of the Republic of Moldova for UNESCO, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Moldova, the Ministry of Labour, Social Protection and Family of the Republic of Moldova and the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Moldova. The project beneficiary – the Institute of Oncology of the Republic of Moldova is located in the capital Chisinau. As a follow up in this domain, HOPE’87 and Speranta 87 in close cooperation with the National Commission of the Republic of Moldova for UNESCO developed and published the information and methodological guide with the title “Practical recommendations on how to work with children and youth suffering from cancer” for psychologists, educators, teachers, parents, volunteers and the staff of the Institute of Oncology. Further, the National Conference “10 years of activity. Achievements and Aspirations” dedicated to the 10thanniversary of the Educational Centre for children on long-term treatment at the Institute of Oncology was organised on March 23rd 2023. Among many other participants, it was attended by H.E. Maia Sandu, the President of the Republic of Moldova and Mr Robert Ottitsch, Secretary General of HOPE’87.
